COMMITMENT TO THE EMBODYMENT OF EQUITABLE, HARM REDUCTIVE, & LIBERATORY PRACTICES
At The Root's Social Equity Plan:
At The Root, LLC (www.getattheroot.com) is a solo coaching and consulting practice that supports individuals and groups in acknowledging, naming, addressing and navigating power dynamics, fostering intercultural competence and cultural humility, and using culturally-relevant, trauma-informed, harm reduction, somatic (body-informed) strategies to co-create equitable, inclusive, and empowering decison-making processes and healthy, proactive, generative, and mutually collaborative environments.
Purpose:
The purpose of this Social Equity Plan (SEP) is to define and outline the values and principles that guide my practice and the ways in which I will both work to hold myself and my practice accountable, as well as the means by which I invite my community to hold me accountable.
Commitments:
I am committed to a process rooted in racial and social equity and collective liberation. As such, I am further committed to an anti-racist, trauma-informed, healing-centered approach that centers and embodies equitable, harm reduction and liberatory practices. This is therefore an ask and an invitation to engage in processes of restorative and collaborative justice and co-accountability. I am open to and encourage questions and feedback about my approach and impact, and I hope that you will engage in a practice of vulnerability and humility with me to deliver any necessary feedback with the recognition and acknowledgement of our collective humanity.
Five interconnected principles central to this process are access, inclusivity, diversity, justice, and equity. These terms are defined as followed:
Access refers to the opportunity or ability of individuals or groups to obtain resources, services, opportunities, and/or rights on an equal basis. It emphasizes the removal of barriers and the creation of conditions that enable everyone to participate fully and fairly in society, regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances. This notion underscores the importance of ensuring that all members of society have equitable access to essential resources and opportunities, thereby promoting fairness and justice.
Inclusivity denotes the establishment of environments wherein all parties affected and influenced by decisions are afforded equitable opportunities to contribute. It underscores the recognition of historical disparities in power dynamics, aiming to address and mitigate entrenched social hierarchies that have historically marginalized and silenced certain individuals and their unique lived experiences from mainstream discourse. Inclusivity endeavors to ensure that every impacted individual and group is recognized for their worth and is empowered to participate in decision-making processes, thereby fostering a more equitable distribution of influence and agency within society.
Diversity emphasizes the significance of recognizing and appreciating the distinctive lived experiences, cultures, skills, worldviews, knowledge systems, wisdom, and physical attributes of every individual and community. It acknowledges that each person brings something valuable to the collective, enhancing the richness of our shared existence. By celebrating diversity, we not only affirm the value and worth of our own unique identities but also recognize and honor the diversity of others. Ultimately, diversity enhances our personal lives, fortifies our institutions, and fosters a more dynamic and prosperous society.
Justice involves establishing and consistently supporting policies, practices, attitudes, and behaviors that ensure fair distribution of power, access, opportunities, treatment, and outcomes for all members of society. It implies a commitment to addressing systemic inequalities and actively working towards creating a level playing field where everyone has the chance to thrive. Justice entails a collective effort to dismantle barriers and rectify historical injustices, fostering a society where equity and fairness are upheld as fundamental principles.
Equity entails actively involving all affected individuals in the processes of planning, decision-making, and evaluation. This involves ensuring a fair and just allocation of resources and opportunities, establishing economic and social systems that are sustainable and benefit everyone. It requires authentically embodying principles such as access, inclusivity, diversity, and justice. Additionally, it demands a bold and unwavering long-term commitment to uncovering the root causes of social inequities and addressing the barriers they create.
Performance Measures:
All frameworks and policies are informed by the above stated principles and values. Due to the exploitative nature of capitalistic endeavors, there are inherent contradictions in this work, specifically at the structural and institutional levels. Even still, I am committed to upholding and embodying these principles and values to the best of my ability. To ensure I stay accountable these commitments, I intend to engage in the following ongoing professional collaborative and development practices, include the following structures and evaluate accomplishments based on the following performance measures:
